Happy New Year and Other Awesome Stuff!

January 11th, 2011 by Nev | No Comments | Filed in Site Updates

I hope everybody out there started the new year out in good shape, whether it was spent sipping champagne with loved ones, or winning a heated game of Beer Pong at a buddy’s place. Whatever you did, I hope you did it your way and in your own special style.

So, in this first, albeit belated, post of the year, I should probably outline what’s in store for SuperiorSportsBar.com in 2011. I have a bunch of site improvements planned out for the coming months including a better designed home page and category pages as well as a slew of product bundles at great prices that you can only find here. I’m also keeping my eyes peeled for new and exciting products to add the site, so if you’ve ever wished that I’d get off my duff and finally carry “Product XYZ,” now’s the time to tell me about it.

So, stay tuned for more site updates and a ton of new products to hit the virtual shelves this year.

Cheers!

Drink Recipe Friday: Mint Vodka Berry Tonic!

July 23rd, 2010 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Drink Recipes, Recipes, Uncategorized

Here’s a drink recipe that I came up with a while ago. I’m sure it’s been done before, but I thought I’d share it anyway seeing how it’s become a Summer staple in our house.

Ingredients:
Vodka
Fresh mint (see below)
Fresh raspberries (or blackberries)
Tonic water (soda water might be a better choice here, but I haven’t tried it. We usually have tonic on hand for V&Ts so that’s what I used).
Ice

Method:
Fill a mason jar (or any other glass jar) about 1/4 of the way up with berries. Fill until the jar is about about 3/4 full with fresh mint leaves. Fill with vodka, seal the jar and let it sit for a few hours (the longer the better). Infusing the vodka with the mint and berries not only combines the flavors, but doing so also gives the vodka a light, minty fragrance adding another layer of subtlety to the finished drink. This process also changes the color, too making the finished drink look nice, too.

After the vodka concoction has sat long enough, strain some vodka into a glass. You can use any kind of strainer as long as it can catch the berry seeds. Strain out about 1.5 to 2 ounces of vodka into a shot glass or jigger. Fill a glass with ice and pour the vodka in. Fill with tonic and garnish with a fresh sprig of mint and enjoy!

NOTE ABOUT FRESH INGREDIENTS:
I highly recommend picking some fresh mint leaves from a nearby mint plant. If you don’t happen to have one handy, you can use dried mint. My partner Kate and I had to pilfer some mint from her mom’s garden. So you know- do whatever works. You can also buy a fresh mint plant at your local grocery store for a few bucks, too. The awesome thing about growing mint is that it’s resilient and will grow profusely and with abandon, giving you an unending supply. One recommendation I have about planting and keeping mint is to plant it in a bucket! That’ll keep it from spreading throughout your entire garden and make it easier to bring inside so you can enjoy spiked mint hot chocolate throughout the cold months.

But I digress, this isn’t a gardening blog after all. Gardening is Kate’s thing and she’s far better at it than I. Another thing you’ll also need are some fresh raspberries or blackberries. We’re all about buying from the local farms around here, so that’s where we get ours. I haven’t tried this recipe with frozen berries, I’m sure they’ll work just fine, too.

Until next time!

How To Accurately Measure Your Liquor

July 20th, 2010 by admin | No Comments | Filed in bar supplies, bartending

Here’s a really helpful video I ran across showing how to measure your liquor. Expert bartender Babz Zerillo not only shows you how to use a jigger to measure out your alcohol, but she also teaches a couple different techniques to accurately pour the right amount into the glass without any kind of measuring tool other than your brain. This is good stuff for you aspiring bartenders!

If you’re like me, you’re probably getting ready to celebrate our great country’s independence this weekend and planning on having a few drinks with friends and family, too. Just because I like to share, I wanted to show you this great recipe for a 4th of July themed Pina Colada that I found courtesy of the Art of the Drink guy on YouTube:

I’m sure I don’t even have to say it to you, but in case there’s a no-account hooligan behind you while you’re watching this, don’t be a rookie and drive after you imbibe this weekend.

HAPPY 4th!

IT’S ALIIIIVE! Monstrously Cool 36 oz Freezer Mug On The Way!

June 22nd, 2010 by admin | No Comments | Filed in bar supplies, drinkware, freezer mugs, MLB Drinkware, MLB Merchandise, NFL Drinkware, NFL Merchandise

Hooray for summer!

I have a New England Patriots Crystal Freezer Mug that I got a while ago and I’m still amazed at how awesome it is. It keeps my ice coffee freezing cold (without the ice) and my latest homebrew just as cold for the entire evening. I literally use it all the time and couldn’t imagine spending a hot summer without it.

Recently, I was shocked and amazed when one of my sports gear suppliers announced plans to sell a bigger version of their wildly successful Crystal Freezer Mug. With a maximum capacity of 36 fluid ounces, this aptly named Monster Sized Crystal Freezer Mug will be able to hold THREE entire beers.

Think about that for a second. You could ostensibly fill this freezer mug before the game and never have to get a refill. It’s sure to stay icy cold for the whole game thanks to the super cold sealed inner layer.

For those times when you can’t enjoy a brew (like when you’re delivering a baby, or flying a commercial jet liner) you can fill it with 36 ounces of iced tea, lemonade or water to hold you over until your relief punches in.

Right now, for an extremely limited time, you can Pre-Order one of these gargantuan frosty tankards for only $18. This special price only lasts until 4:45pm this Friday, June 25th.

Improve Your Dart Game With Statistics and Software

December 7th, 2009 by admin | No Comments | Filed in darts, throwing darts

What does a statistician do when his roommate soundly kicks his butt at darts game after game? That’s right, he develops a Gaussian model to calculate where he should aim on the dart board to maximize his points.

Yeah, not an obvious answer for most of us, but what Ryan Tibshirani did was pretty damn ingenious. Figuring that your accuracy should influence where you aim is something people don’t necessarily think about when playing a game of Hi Score. Lots of us, myself included, just aim for the 20 and take our lumps when we miss and get a 1 instead.

Tibshirani started off by throwing 50 darts at the bull’s-eye, then he ran his scores through an algorithm that computes his rank from 0 to 100 (best to worst). Then, he wrote some number crunching software that highlights the best spots on a dart board for someone of his rank to aim. Not satisfied with being the only one to benefit from his work, he made a web app that can help you calculate your sweet spot, too. What a guy!

Here’s where to find the app:
stat.stanford.edu/~ryantibs/darts

So, what’s next for Ryan’s foray into darting? Obviously, he wants to make a dart throwing robot. What this means for the inevitable robot Armageddon, I can’t exactly say. But at least we casual darters can enjoy some improved scoring thanks to Ryan Tibshirani.

I found about this in Wired Magazine’s November Issue.

That’s what director Dan Lindsay wants to get across in his new movie about the world of competitive Beer Pong entitled “Last Cup: Road to The World Series of Beer Pong.”

Last Cup chronicles the lives of four professional Beer Pong players from across the country as they journey to the World Series of Beer Pong Championship in Mesquite, NV to try to claim the $20,000 prize. Read more about the movie here: Last Cup Movie.
